The increasing global energy consumption and challenges in power supply due to natural disasters underscore the importance of energy storage technology. So, the Energy Storage System (ESS) is gaining prominence. ESS converts renewable energy into electricity, storing it for future use. It contains multiple high-performance battery cells capable of storing large amounts of electricity. What’s preferred for ESS is the LFP batteries, which consist of lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) as the cathode material, due to their low cost, stability, and long lifespan.
LG Energy Solution is investing in the development of LFP cells for ESS to help alleviate the global power shortage. In this episode of Better Life, we will explore a day in the life of Jin-su Seong, who is working on developing LFP battery cells for ESS!

My name is Jin-su Seong and I develop LFP cells for ESS (Energy Storage System)
at the LG Energy Solution R&D Campus in Daejeon.😁
I requested the manufacture of cells based on the electrode design that had been confirmed through experiments last week.
Today, we are going to find out how it went!
*LFP: Lithium Ferrophosphate (LiFePO4), a cathode material consisting of iron phosphate
instead of cobalt in lithium cobalt oxide (LCO).
We need to measure the weight, thickness, volume, and voltage of
the manufactured cells to see
if they are made according to the design.🔎

Today, my colleagues from the music club and
I are going to practice for a gig at lunch.
I play the cello in the club!
We had a music performance at Entral Park the other day.
We’re serious about the club’s activities!
In the afternoon, I am going to conduct
a charge-discharge test to learn if the performance of the cells
I checked in the morning is as designed.🪫🔋🔌
I need to measure and test the performance of
the manufactured cells during the charge and discharge cycle test
to check if they have the designed capacity and
can achieve the target lifespan.✍🗒

by testing with my team members!
