LG Energy Solution established production facilities and joint ventures in core areas of North America early on to target the battery market there. In Ohio, a hub of American manufacturing, we partnered with a leading global automotive company to establish a joint venture. We’ll explore Ohio’s regional attributes and LG Energy Solution’s initiatives in today’s World Battery Tour.
Ohio, the birthplace of the Wright Brothers and the state known for its Great Lakes
The name “Ohio” is derived from a Native American language, meaning “great river.” Ohio lives up to its name with thousands of rivers and lakes. Lake Erie, one of the Great Lakes, lies to the north, while the Ohio River flows to the south.
Ohio is also home of the Wright Brothers who are renowned for achieving the world’s first powered flight. From their childhood, the Wright Brothers had a keen interest in airplanes. Their dedication to plane research culminated in the successful realization of powered flight, making a significant contribution to the advancement of the aviation industry.
As for industries, Ohio’s abundance of natural resources and well-developed transportation infrastructure facilitated the early growth of industries including manufacturing. Today, it is considered as one of the main manufacturing areas in the U.S.
Establishment of joint venture “Ultium Cells” with a global automaker
LG Energy Solution established its facilities in Ohio to leverage the state’s excellent locational advantages. In 2019, we partnered with General Motors (GM) to establish Ultium Cells, a joint venture, with a goal to establish three electric vehicle battery plants in key areas of the U.S.
The first of the three plants is in Ohio. It commenced mass production of electric vehicle batteries in the second half of 2022. With an extensive annual battery production capacity exceeding 35GWh, this facility has become a pivotal hub driving the North American electric vehicle battery market forward. LG Energy Solution intends to enhance the production capacity of the Ultium Cells plants in phases, beginning with the first one. Our ultimate goal is to push the production capacity of the entire joint venture plants up to above 120 GWh per year.
In today’s episode of World Battery Tour, we have witnessed LG Energy Solution’s steadfast commitment to leading the North American electric vehicle market through partnerships with top global companies. Next time, we will journey to Tennessee, where Ultium Cells’ second plant is built. Join us as we explore the innovative strides LG Energy Solution is making in the North American battery market.
