LG Energy Solution is expanding its global manufacturing footprint by establishing production bases and implementing market-specific strategies. The company manufactures high-quality batteries across key regions, including North America, Europe, and Asia, addressing diverse customer needs. In this episode of the World Battery Tour, we’re heading to Karawang, Indonesia, home to HLI Green Power, a joint venture formed to enhance its market competitiveness in the ASEAN region and beyond.
Indonesia, the World’s Largest Archipelago with Stunning Natural Beauty and Abundant Resources
Indonesia, located along the equator between the Indian and Pacific Oceans, is an island nation with Jakarta as its capital. With more than 17,000 islands stretching across its vast territory, it is recognized as the world’s largest archipelago.
The country’s unique geography has fostered a rich cultural and ethnic diversity. Indonesia’s population of approximately 270 million comprises over 300 ethnic groups, including the Javanese, Sundanese, Acehnese, Batak, and Balinese, each with its own language and tradition. This diversity creates a unique cultural experience, where multiple languages and customs coexist. Among Indonesia’s many regions, Bali stands out as a premier tourist destination, renowned for its crystal-clear waters and exotic landscapes.
Beyond its cultural richness, Indonesia is also endowed with abundant natural resources essential for industry. Notably, the country is the world’s top reserve holder and producer of nickel, a key raw material for batteries. Leveraging these vast resources, the Indonesian government is actively fostering the electric vehicle (EV) industry, positioning the nation as a crucial player in the global battery supply chain.
LG Energy Solution Establishes HLI Green Power Targeting ASEAN and Global Markets
Recognizing Indonesia’s market potential, LG Energy Solution has positioned the country as a strategic hub to strengthen its presence in both ASEAN and global markets. The company has established operations in Karawang Regency’s Karawang New Industry City (KNIC), a key industrial center in Indonesia by founding the joint venture HLI Green Power with Hyundai Motor Group and building a dedicated battery manufacturing plant.
HLI Green Power has an annual production capacity of 10 GWh, enough to supply batteries for over 150,000 EVs. The joint plant, constructed on a 330,000-square-meter site, began operations in April 2024, following its groundbreaking in 2021.
Additionally, HLI Green Power is the first facility in Indonesia to establish an end-to-end local EV production system. It encompasses the entire value chain—from securing raw materials and manufacturing batteries to mounting them onto vehicles and selling finished EVs. With this comprehensive infrastructure, it has now achieved stable mass production of battery products.
LG Energy Solution aims to position HLI Green Power as a key production hub for the ASEAN and global EV markets, ensuring a swift and strategic response to the rapidly growing global EV demand.
In today’s tour, we explored LG Energy Solution’s efforts to lead not only the ASEAN market but also the global battery industry. Where will the next stop on the World Battery Tour be? Stay tuned to find out!
